for months, i’ve been dying to go to a slow food uw event. slow food, according to the movement’s national website, “is an idea, a way of living & a way of eating. it is part of a global, grassroots movement with thousands of members in over 150 countries, which links the pleasure of food with a commitment to community & the environment.” interesting & delectable food served in a way that supports the community & the environment is definitely something i can get behind. the bonus is that you get to get full while you support this awesome movement.
i got wind of this organization from don, who is my good friend katie’s little brother. he is a hippie & that’s why we love him. this week, don invited us to join him for lunch at the slow food cafe, which is located in the basement of a church at 1127 university avenue, right across the street from the law school. i knew i would otherwise be fretting about an oral argument i had to give at 1:20, so i agreed to meet everyone there at 12. when i saw the menu pictured above, my nerves dissipated & all i could think about was how i wanted to eat everything on the menu (without spilling on my suit, of course).
i ended up ordering the turkey salad sandwich with house-dried scali bread & a creamy buttercup squash & sage soup on the side. katie & kari both ordered the roasted winter vegetable pasta salad with herbed vinaigrette as a side to their sandwiches. don ordered the beet & blue cheese burger with nut, arugula & pea shoots (pictured above). we all shared a sugar cookie with jam & a vegan pumpkin muffin for dessert (which was so rich, i couldn’t even believe it was vegan). everything was so good. i loved the laid-back, fun ambiance of the cafe, how students & professors alike seemed to be drawn to the event & how everyone seemed to know each other. i also couldn’t believe how cheap the food was, especially considering how unique & scrumptious it was. what an easy way to eat tasty, healthy food while supporting the community & the environment. definitely go check it out if you are able to. the cafe is open on wednesdays from 11:30-2.
