while i was walking my pup yesterday, i looked up to see someone excitedly rushing toward me yelling “tina!” it was my delightfully free-spirited friend michelle, whose love of traveling & foreign languages has taken her to live in germany for the year. she’s only in the country for a few days, so we agreed to grab a bite to eat this morning at lazy jane’s on willy street. i had been there once before, but this time around was much more enjoyable. because it was a weekday, there was no line or long wait for food like there was the first time i went on a late weekend morning.
i ordered a cup of joe (free refills!) & the grilled cheese, which was piled high with avocados, tomatoes & grilled red onions. it was perfect & came with generous sides of potato chips & greens. michelle ordered a veggie melt with artichokes & tomatoes. her two lovely sisters, whom i met for the first time today, ordered seitan melts. i had never heard of seitan before, but after doing some research, i learned that it is a gluten-based alternative to soy-based meat substitutes like tofu. it was very meaty & flavorful–i couldn’t believe it wasn’t meat when i had a bite.
the warm & cozy atmosphere of this willy street neighborhood restaurant creates the perfect environment for enjoying good conversation over a heaping plate of comfort food. i’ll definitely be bringing my parents here when they visit madison next semester!
